Our visit to the elegant yet rustic Hawksmoor House

A quick 25 minutes drive from Cape Town, Hawksmoor House is the perfect couples retreat. We checked in here on a Thursday afternoon for a night of relaxation, peace and quiet and that’s exactly what we got. Hawksmoor House is part of the Lion Roars hotel group and is located on a magnificent wine farm near Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands. Their wine is bottled under the label “Hawksmoor at Matjieskuil” and although they do not produce their own wine on site, all the grapes are grown and harvested on the farm.

Hawksmoor House

The manor house on this 220-hectare farm is an immaculate Cape Dutch style house, which the owners have furnished with carefully chosen antiques that compliment this 300-year-old homestead. They have done everything to make you feel comfortable and right at home during your stay, the staff are efficient and attentive, yet discreet.

The 15 rooms (which are located away from the manor house) are all individually decorated each with their own theme and beautifully chosen antiques, we stayed in the Pharmacy Room, this was where the poison for the farm was kept in earlier years. Our room was elegantly comfortable, with all the necessaries to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, with spectacular views of the farm, Table Mountain, and the sea in the distance.

For summer months, there is a swimming pool located at the end of the garden with sun loungers where you can spend the afternoons lazing and soaking up the sun in this tranquil environment. In the winter months, there is a great fireplace in the manor house living room, a divine spot to spend the evenings with a glass of wine in one hand and a book in the other. In the living room, you will also find a self-service bar where you can help yourself to Hawksmoor wines, beers and spirits.

The manor house has a delightful veranda with views of Table Mountain, a great spot to watch the sun go down with Grace and Virginie, the two resident German Pointer dogs (who are extremely well behaved and very friendly).

The only complaint we have is that our stay was far too short, but we will be back in summer so that we can make the most of the swimming pool and sip wine on the veranda while watching the sunset.
