Old world charm at its best, Stormsvlei Riverside Cottages are located in the Overberg on the banks of the Sonderend River, on a working dairy farm. This historic farm is 20km from Riviersonderend, just off the N2 on the R317 leading to Bonnievale and Robertson.
In the 1900’s this was a bustling little hamlet with a wagon maker’s shop and mill, a school, church hall, General Dealer, a butcher, a post office, police station, garages, an inn and later a hotel. Some of the buildings date back to the 1700s giving you a nostalgic feeling along with a sense of relaxation.
We booked out the whole ‘town’ with a group of friends for the weekend. Our host Juanika Thompson welcomed us with home made bread rolls for everyone and fresh farm milk. The Thompson’s have restored and maintained the buildings and converted them into Self Catering accommodation, endeavouring to keep the balance between the old world and modern comforts.
The School House has been converted to a 3 sleeper unit with one bedroom being ensuite, a big kitchen with a fireplace, a dining area and a charming sunbathed stoep.
The Post Office has one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen, lounge and dining room with a beautiful old fireplace and a cute little stoep perfect for morning coffee and rusks.
There are another 3 cottages close to the river that all have fireplaces, great views and luscious green lawn for afternoon picnics.
All the units have fireplaces which are great in the winter months as it gets quite chilly out there.
The farm is on the Sonderend River which means you can swim, make use of the canoes or the barge (available for rent) and spend summer and winter days on the water floating down the river. The old wagonmaker’s shop has been converted to a cosy braai room full of antique machinery and tools, the perfect spot for evening braai’s and get together’s.
Being the cat lovers that we are, we made friends with the two resident cats, which just love all the attention. The owners also have 2 Ridgebacks and a Jack Russell that may come and say hello and are all very friendly and well behaved. There are also 3 Fallow deer that can be spotted grazing around the church in the afternoons.
A friend that was with us for the weekend is a yoga teacher, so we were treated to a yoga lesson on the lawns on Saturday afternoon, what a great tranquil environment it was for this. The farm is the perfect place for a weekend away with friends, as a family and even for weddings – they have a church and a hall on the premises.
