Romantic weekend in Platbos Forest

Platbos Forest

Looking for a romantic cabin in the woods, off the grid, where the only noises you will hear is that of chirping birds? Then look no further than Platbos Forest!

We have just returned from the most relaxing, rejuvenating weekend in an indigenous Milkwood forest. The Platbos Forest is situated at the foot of Africa, it is an ancient indigenous forest with trees over 1000 years old.

We arrived late on Friday afternoon at Platbos Forest which is about 2,5 hours drive from Cape Town, close to Gaansbaai.

There are 3 different glamping accommodation options (which all have the option of bringing your own tent and setting up camp for more people) as well as a forest camp.

We stayed in the Bush Buck Suite, which is in the middle of the forest, under a canopy of trees perched on a wooden platform with fold down canvas sides on the one side and a solid wooden wall and windows on the other. The cabin is open plan with a kitchen area, a dining table, an indoor fireplace and a queen size bed with a mosquito net. Everything you need for a rustic weekend in the woods.

The bathroom is open air  and outdoors, we both loved this, there is something amazing about showering out in the open with the cool fresh air and the hot steamy water (which you have to heat up using a “donkey”)

We spent our first evening setting up camp, making our fire for our steak braai and then sipping on wine and enjoying the peace and quiet.  Being Halloween weekend, The Beard did try to make a couple of jokes about us being alone in the forest, but The Blonde quickly stopped him!

After a very peaceful night sleep, we woke up to the sound of chirping birds, opened the canvas flaps to admire the forest view, made some coffee and climbed back into bed with a book.

We had a very lazy morning (what weekends like this are made for), and eventually dragged ourselves out of bed to go for a long walk in the magical forest.

When there is not much to do, then what one needs to do is nothing! And that is exactly what we did, after our walk, we climbed back into bed with a book and had an afternoon nap.

Dinner for the night was a delicious chicken potjie, while we waited for this to cook, we opened a bottle of red wine and sat around the fire chatting and enjoying each others company. After our potjie, we toasted marshmallows on the fire and then snuggled in bed for another peaceful night sleep.

We had a truly magical time at The Platbos Forest, the perfect place to unwind and relax in nature.
