Visting Addo & Tipi Bush Camp

Addo Elephant National Park

On a rainy Thursday morning, we set off from George towards the Eastern Cape, we had planned on heading to the Transkei, but the weather forecast showed that it was raining so we had to change our trip slightly.

We had never been to Addo Elephant Park, the weather looked clear and we wanted to do a game drive before we left South Africa, so this was the perfect opportunity. Unfortunately, we had left booking accommodation far too late and everything in Addo Elephant park was fully booked, so we found the next best thing (if not better). The Tipi Bush Camp, just 10 minutes drive from Addo main gate.

Tipi Bush Camp is on a small game farm overlooking Addo. They have 3 large Tipi’s (based on the American Indian style) that can accommodation 4 people on a very comfortable double bed and a sleeper couch. Each Tipi has a kitchenette, a sofa, a table and chairs, an outdoor braai and separate ablutions (with a toilet, shower and basin) a little distance from the Tipi’s.

We spent two nights at the Tipi Bush Camp, the Tipi’s all overlook the Addo Elephant Park over the road, (be sure to pack your binoculars) so you can view the wildlife from the comfort of your own deck. We had very cute Vervet monkeys visit us outside our tipi (please don’t feed them) and saw a couple of different buck and some ostrich on the Bush Lodge property.

We spent our evening’s braaing and enjoying all the noises of the wild – zebra, jackal and lions roaring in the distance.

We spent our days exploring Addo Elephant park (entrance fees: R 44 ) and saw loads of Elephant, Zebra, Warthog, Kudu, Meerkats, Yellow tail Mongoose, Black backed Jackal, Eland, Buffalo, Blesbok and plenty of birds.

We had packed a picnic lunch, so we stopped at a lovely picnic spot inside the park with semi private picnic areas with benches and braai places.

We had a great time at Addo Elephant National Park and highly recommend staying at the Tipi Bush Camp for a truly African experience.
