Brunch at the Piggery Cafe

The Piggery Cafe

Rustic and relaxed the Piggery Cafe at Burnham Beeches is a great place to visit with something for the whole family. Shannon Bennett has teamed up with business partner Adam Garrison with the goal to create a gourmet destination. Gary (The Beard) being the Masterchef Australia fan that he is was extremely excited when he heard we would be visiting Shannon’s restaurant and we were certainly not disappointed.

Burnham Beeches is located in the Dandenong Ranges, less than an hours drive from Melbourne city. At the entrance to the estate, you will be met by two old grain silos fringed by green lawn, and the wonderful smell of food being grilled on open flames.

Burnham Beeches dates back to late 1920’s, with a beautiful iconic Art Moderne mansion on the estate which has had many different functions. Originally it was a private residence, then a children’s hospital during WWII after that it was converted into a hotel which was only open for a short period. Shannon and Adam hope to turn this building into a 6-star luxury retreat in the near future. The Piggery Cafe and state of the art bakery is housed in an old converted piggery next to the old grain silos.

We had a table book with family for brunch on the Easter weekend. When we arrived, we were seated outside on the veranda at long bench tables under toasty heaters. The food and drinks that arrived were all delicious yet simple and beautifully presented. The brunch menu is small but there is something for everyone and the coffees were perfectly brewed.

After breakfast, we made our way into the bakery that was bustling with people and had a tempting display of pastries, cakes, bread and fresh coffee, all available for takeaway.

Burnham Beeches is the perfect place to come with children as they can run free on the lawn, feed the pigs and emu’s, pet the pony and build towers on the playground. The estate has a 500 tree trufferrie as well as a 6-acre vegetable garden, guests are also able to have a game of lawn bowls, bocce and croquet.

We thoroughly enjoyed our morning here and hope to return and experience the lunch menu at the Piggery Cafe in the near future!
