Palm beach is the most northerly point of Sydney Suburbs, surrounded by water and glorious views making it a great spot for a hike & day trip. Palm Beach is also the outdoor filming location for the soapie “Home and Away” and a great place to do some celebrity spotting over the summer months when the rich and famous are out and about.
Pack some beach gear and a picnic and head to Governor Phillip car park (you can find this on Google Maps) for a walk up the Barrenjoey Headland to the heritage listed Barrenjoey Head Lighthouse. At the top you will be treated to beautiful views over Palm Beach, Pittwater and the ocean.
Getting there: Palm Beach is just over an hours car drive or a 2 hour bus trip (check google maps for bus times and pick up locations) from Sydney.
Walk Distance: 2,3km return
Time: 30 minutes up, 30 minutes down
Park in the Governor Phillip car park (make sure you pay for parking to avoid a fine). Walk to the end of the parking area towards the lighthouse, follow the beach along the left, on the Pittwater side of the peninsula. Look out for the signs to the Barrenjoey Headland walking trail.
There are two routes up – we would suggest taking the shorter Access Trail on the way up and the narrower Smugglers Track on the way down. Both routes have gorgeous views of Palm Beach and great photo opportunities.
Once you reach the top, spend some time exploring the Barrenjoey Lighthouse on the headland. Walk past the lighthouse for more glorious and uninterrupted views of Palm Beach. Keep your eyes open for dolphins, whales and watch and boats in the distance.
After your walk, take a dip in the ocean or have a drink and something to eat at The Boathouse.
