The Blue Mountain are known for dramatic views, eucalyptus forests, cascading waterfalls, bush walks and cute historic towns. Only a 90 minute drive from Sydney CBD, the Blue Mountains is the perfect place to getaway for a night or even a week.
We had already booked our accommodation in Katoomba at the historic Carrington Hotel. So we woke up early on a sunny winters morning, packed a flask of coffee and hit the road. With so many things on our to do and see list, we wasted no time and headed straight to our first stop.
Here is what we got up to:
Scenic World is a great spot for kids and adults alike. It’s a good introduction to everything the Blue Mountains has to offer in terms of scenery, all in one spot. Purchase a day pass that will allow you access to all the “rides”, the bottom of the valley and the boardwalk though the rainforest.
Pro tip 1: Make sure you get to Scenic World early in the morning or as soon as they open as it does get quite busy later in the day.
Pro tip 2: Make sure you set your seat on the Railway to “Cliff Hanger” for a ride that had us in stitches from sheer fear!
Cahill’s Lookout is located in Katoomba, a short drive from the centre of town. It’s a great spot to watch the sun set over the Blue Mountains and get a few instaworthy snaps. Take a walk down to the viewing area or watch it from the road side, either view is just as good.
Echo Point – Three Sisters Lookout
The Three Sisters lookout point is probably the most visited lookout in the Blue Mountains. You will find bus loads of tourists here during the day. So our advice is get there for sunrise, the views are magnificent at this time of day and you will be able to beat the crowds.
Laura is a tiny town just a 5 minute drive from Katoomba. The town has lots of character and a great vibe. Park your car and walk up the main street stopping in at a few of the shops along the way. If you walk to the top of the street towards the train track you will come across a great spot for lunch called Leura Garage. On a sunny day make sure you get a table outside!
There are many view points around Katoomba and Leura all with stunning views over the valley and mountain range. Our suggestion is take a look on Google Maps to find the lookouts closest to you or in the direction you are heading, there are just so many good ones!
We really enjoyed our stay at the historic Carrington hotel. The hotel has recently been restored to its old glory keeping all the historic details and features. Take a walk around the hotel and visit the grand dining hall, the lounge, the library and billiards room, you will feel as if you have been transported back in time.
The hotel is located perfectly in the centre of town, in walking distance from all the restaurants and cafes.
